Spotlight: Confetti
Confetti is a film by the famous Ann Hu. Hu is a writer, producer, and director, and the film is based on her journey of raising a daughter with dyslexia. Just like Hu, the main character, Lan, moves from China to the U.S. to find a school that offers specialized education and supports all learning styles.
I watched this film and truly enjoyed every second of it. You could really feel each character's emotions through the screen, and every visual felt very intentional and strengthened the story. We got to follow the mindset of Lan and Mei Mei, understanding the perspective of a parent and child navigating the same experience.
Hu created this film to shed light on the universal story of navigating dyslexia. In her director's statement, she said: "Along my journey, I encountered many parents and children with similar struggles from all around America, China and the world. And I heard their stories. I was humbled by their experiences and determination, and shocked by how big the dyslexic population is (about 10-30%) internationally, and how little the world understands dyslexia, and how amazingly gifted these people are, and how few, even today, of us know that we have the tools to overcome it with proper guidance at an early age!"
